Anniversary Dinner 2017

Reading Golf Club     Thursday 21st September 2017

Reading Golf Club served up a superb 80th Anniversary carvery meal for our
80th Anniversary Dinner. After the meal the peerless Master of Ceremonies Vice President Alec Bath introduced the evening’s speakers.

Captain Giuseppe Lo Bue warmly welcomed all the members, with a special welcome for our guests from the Eastern Region Railway Golfing Society, the LMS (London) Golfing Society and the Southern Railway Golfing Society.

Principal speaker, Howard Rowley gave an entertaining and informative insight into the Society’s history, basing his presentation around six of the Society’s trophies: the Portal Cup, Viscount Horne Cup, Sir James Milne Trophy, Dashwood Salver, Dr Newnham ‘Weekend’ Cup and Wally Richards Cup.
The huge contribution to the Society’s history made by the men behind these trophies was illustrated through photographs and newspaper clippings projected onto a large screen, backed up by anecdotes and jokes. The ‘coup de grâce’ was the unveiling of a working ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ model railway which followed the precedent set at a lunch arranged for C.R.Dashwood, the Societies first Captain.
[An illustrated write up of these important people will appear on the website.]

Vice President Gordon Shirreffs presented Howard with a Red Letter Day gift voucher (Rural Escape for Two) in recognition of the dedication, skill and hard
work by both Howard and his wife Rosie in running the existing Society website
and developing the new one.

President Ken Beresford then analysed what a golfing society needs to be successful and concluded that our Society was in good order and well prepared
for the future. He thanked all the speakers and proposed a toast to the Society.

During and after the presentation of prizes both Colin Parsons and David Heydon made speeches on behalf of the guests thanking us for our hospitality and toasting our future; these were much appreciated by the members.
