Portal, Walker & Newport Cups
Thursday 3 September 2026
Travelling all the way to Brentwood in Essex, then playing 27 holes of competitive golf against the might of the Eastern and Southern golfing societies and then travelling all the way home means a very long day. So those eight members who volunteered to represent our Society are all heroes. After last year’s disappointing results at Reigate Hill when we came away empty-handed, there was a steely determination about the team, led by Captain Alex Gretton. And they did not let us down.
The morning competitions are over 9 holes. We compete for both the Walker Cup (3 teams of 8 playing individual Stableford, with the best 7 scores counting for each team) and the Newport Cup (combined scores of each team’s captain and secretary or their representatives). The Old Bailey (Nigel) was in sparkling form and his score of 21 points was the best score of the morning. He was well supported by Stewart Hamilton and Chris Apsey (18 points each) and by Secretary Simon Homans with 17 points. Our team score of 114 points comfortably won the Walker Cup from runners-up the Southern with 103 points. Captain Alex and Simon also won the Newport Cup. Their aggregate score of 30 was two better than the runners-up, again the Southern.
The Walker & Newport Cups Results Sheet below shows all the scores and the final results tables for both competitions.
IIn the afternoon we competed for the Portal Cup, playing 4-ball better ball matchplay over 18 holes. All 3 teams won two matches each and lost two matches each. In the event of a tie, the result is determined by adding together the winning margin of each match - so a win by 4&3 gives a winning margin of 4, whilst a loss of 2&1 gives a winning margin of -2. This meant that the Southern just pipped us for the trophy, with the Eastern in third place. This was deja vu, a repetition of what happened last year at Reigate Hill when the Southern also edged us into second place. So close, yet so far from a clean sweep of all 3 competitions!
The Portal Cup Results Sheet below shows all the match results and the final results table.
