Winter Warmer & AGM: John Prowting Cup
Donnington Valley Golf Club, Berkshire - Monday 29 April 2024
After prolonged heavy rain the previous day, there was a real danger that buggies would be banned at our first meeting of the year. But at the 11th hour (07.30 that morning), the all clear was given and the Secretary breathed a sigh of relief. 17 members joined Captain Dave Wiggett to compete for the John Prowting Cup, a singles Stableford competition. The weather was dry and, even if it sometimes felt a little chilly in the blustery wind, we were just glad to have a decent day. The course was in good condition, nevertheless it managed to get the better of all of us, except one. Josh Lawrence was at his swashbuckling best, unleashing drives of close to 300 yards when the wind was behind. His superb score of 37 points would have been even better had it not included several 3-putts and one memorable shot from a difficult lie on the par 5 fifteenth, when the ball actually travelled a few feet backwards! John Graham, Roy Jackson and John Wyatt all scored 31 points, with John G named runner-up thanks to a better back nine. Nigel Bailey won ‘Nearest the Pin’ at the 9th; John Wyatt won ‘Nearest the Pin’ (in 2) at the 18th.
