On a hot and quite humid day, Captain John Mayley and 22 members gathered at Oxford Golf Club to celebrate his Captain’s Day and compete for the Captain’s Cup (Singles Stableford) and the Earl of Dudley Cup (teams of 4, with the best 3 Stableford scores counting at each hole). This was our 2nd visit to Oxford, an attractive course located in the heart of Oxford, with many interesting holes and excellent greens. John Graham won the Captain’s Cup and the Earl of Dudley Cup was won by Simon Homans, Charlie Buttaci, John Graham and Dave Hawes.

The Springs Resort and Golf Club, near Wallingford, has become a popular venue with Society members. This was our 6th visit in the last 7 years. Thanks to the perfect weather and the condition of the course, scoring was high. A rejuvenated Tim Shaughnessy won the Viscount Horne Cup with 41 points, while a swashbuckling 40 points won the McAlpine Cup for John Graham.

On a glorious Spring day, we returned to Kirtlington Golf Club (our second visit) for our first event of the year. The conditions were ideal for good scoring and 17 of the 23 players scored 30 points or more. Pick of the bunch was Gordon Shirreffs, winning the John Prowting Cup (singles Stableford) with a superb 40 points. Charlie Buttaci was runner-up with 37 points. At the AGM, John Mayley was elected Captain and Alex Gretton was elected Vice-Captain.

This was our third consecutive visit to the Cotswolds Hotel, Golf and Spa. We were well looked after by the Hotel, including free room upgrades and this time we enjoyed dry weather on the golf course. The problem was that the golf course was very wet - we only just escaped a partial (holes 1-9) buggy ban on the Friday when Alex Gretton won the Wally Richards Cup with a superb 39 Stableford points. But we were not so lucky on the Saturday after heavy overnight rain, so the Shaugnessy Swish had to be reduced to a 9-hole competition because of the partial buggy ban. Tristan Gretton made it a family double, winning the Swish Trophy with a magnificent 23 points. His total score of 39 points also won the 18-hole prize donated by John Graham. Work issues prevented Captain John Wyatt from attending on Friday, but, in spite of this setback, the annual dinner was a great success.

Badgemore Park is proving to be a popular venue with the members, but turnouts in our three previous visits have been disappointing. This year 21 players, including 4 guests, enjoyed lovely weather, a course in excellent condition and good food. Hats off to our President Alec Bath who had been ill the previous evening but rose from his sickbed to welcome everyone to his President’s Day. Nigel Bailey won the Presidents Cup and also teamed up with Charlie Buttaci and Giuseppe Lo Bue to win the Autumn Cup. Tim Shaugnessy retained the Past Captains’ Cup while Nick Meredith won the Guests’ prize.
Last year, we won the Portal Cup, our first inter-regional trophy for 5 years. This year, we captured both the Walker Cup and Newport Cup but failed to retain the Portal Cup by the narrowest of margins. Well played, Team!

21 members attended our summer break at Hawkstone Park, our 4th visit to this tranquil venue. The attractive and challenging Championship and Hawkstone courses were both in great condition, the weather was warm and dry, and the food and accommodation were good. Andy Burnett won the Ken Beresford Cup and the Peter Skeldon Trophy, Gordon Shirreffs and Roy Jackson won the Dr Newnham Cup and Alex Gretton and Dave Hawes won the Bert Cowlard Trophy. Overall, a very enjoyable 3 days. Click here for the full report and all the scores.

16 members braved one of the hottest days of the year to join Roy Jackson on his 80th birthday and to help him celebrate Vice Presidents’ Day at Richings Park Golf Club near Heathrow Airport. Sadly, Senior Vice President Gordon Shirreffs reluctantly had to withdraw due to the extreme heat. In the morning Texas Scramble (9 holes), Roy inspired his team to win the Vice Presidents’ Challenge Trophy. In the afternoon, Will Burroughs won the Vice Presidents’ Cup. On a wet Spring morning, John Wyatt welcomed 17 members to his first event as Captain at Kirtlington Golf Club, north of Oxford, our first visit. We received a warm welcome, the course was in decent condition but with some very deep rough, the greens were slow but true and the catering was excellent, Sean Cunningham won the Viscount Horne Cup with 38 points; Dave Arnall won the McAlpine Cup with 34 points.

18 members enjoyed a very pleasant day at Donnington Valley Golf Club, our second consecutive visit for the first meeting of the year. Josh Lawrence was the star of the show, winning the John Prowting Cup (singles Stableford) with a magnificent 37 points. John Graham was runner-up with 31 points. Once again, heavy rain threatened to spoil Friday’s golf. But it couldn’t entirely dampen our spirits as we enjoyed our second consecutive stay at the Cotswolds Hotel. Last year, he was runner-up in both Friday’s and Saturday’s competitions; this year Captain Dave was thwarted again by some inspired golf, first by Tristan Gretton (Friday) and then by John Graham (Saturday). In spite of some hiccups, Friday’s dinner was a success, thanks to our master of ceremonies and main speakers who all sparkled.

The 16 players who participated in Alec Bath’s President’s Day included 4 guests - so another disappointing turnout for the last Society Day of the year. Those who did play had a great day, enjoying lovely weather, a good golf course and an excellent dinner. Tim Shaughnessy was in imperious form, winning both the President’s Cup and the Past Captains’ Cup by a wide margin. But his team was pipped for the Autumn Cup by the dream team of Roger Dyer (guest), Phil Spracklen and Giuseppe Lo Bue. Paul O’Neill won the Guest’s Prize.
Great team spirit plus an avalanche of birdies inspired us to win our first inter-regional trophy for 5 years - the Portal Cup, which is the most prestigious of the three inter-regional cups that we contest annually.
Well played, Team!

Our first visit to the Forest of Arden Country Club was a success. The weather was warm and sunny, both courses were excellent and the food and accommodation were good. Captain Dave Wiggett welcomed 24 players, a magnificent turnout - and the four summer break trophies were keenly contested. On Sunday, Chris Apsey finally got his name on a GWR cup, and then did it again on Tuesday (with a little help from Tristan). Well done, Chris! Click here for the full report and all the scores.

For many years, the popular ‘Wyatt Gang’ have travelled considerable distances from Stratford-upon-Avon to play in our competitions. This year, the members showed their appreciation by turning out in force to celebrate Dave Wiggett’s Captain’s Day at his home course.
