The Southern Railway Golfing Society hosted this year’s three inter-regional competitions at Reigate Hill Golf Club. Despite fielding a strong side (plus the Secretary!), we were disappointed to come away empty handed. But we did finish runners-up twice. A big ‘thank you’ to all our 8 players for representing our Society; also a big ‘thank you’ to all those who volunteered to play but had to drop out.

Our first visit to St Pierre Country Park did not get off to a good start. Our first round on the historic Old Course took five and a half hours to complete, due to very slow play by the groups in front of us. But, typically, the 21 GWR members were not subdued for long and quickly bounced back to enjoy an excellent venue with 2 impressive, if parched, golf courses. Nigel Bailey won the Ken Beresford Cup, Gary Heyworth and an embarrassed Andy Burnett won the Dr Newnham Cup and Dave Wiggett and Steve Simmons won the Bert Cowlard Trophy. Gary Heyworth produced the best aggregate score for all 3 rounds to win the Peter Skeldon Trophy. Click here for the full report and all the scores.

On the eve of his 81st birthday, Junior Vice President Roy Jackson obeyed the rules of golfing etiquette by losing the Vice Presidents’ Challenge Trophy to Senior Vice President Gordon Sherriffs at Richings Park Golf Club near Heathrow Airport. He then went on to win the Vice Presidents’ Cup in the afternoon, scoring a magnificent 41 Stableford points. Click here for the full report and all the scores.

On a hot and quite humid day, Captain John Mayley and 22 members gathered at Oxford Golf Club to celebrate his Captain’s Day and compete for the Captain’s Cup (Singles Stableford) and the Earl of Dudley Cup (teams of 4, with the best 3 Stableford scores counting at each hole). This was our 2nd visit to Oxford, an attractive course located in the heart of Oxford, with many interesting holes and excellent greens. John Graham won the Captain’s Cup and the Earl of Dudley Cup was won by Simon Homans, Charlie Buttaci, John Graham and Dave Hawes.

The Springs Resort and Golf Club, near Wallingford, has become a popular venue with Society members. This was our 6th visit in the last 7 years. Thanks to the perfect weather and the condition of the course, scoring was high. A rejuvenated Tim Shaughnessy won the Viscount Horne Cup with 41 points, while a swashbuckling 40 points won the McAlpine Cup for John Graham.

On a glorious Spring day, we returned to Kirtlington Golf Club (our second visit) for our first event of the year. The conditions were ideal for good scoring and 17 of the 23 players scored 30 points or more. Pick of the bunch was Gordon Shirreffs, winning the John Prowting Cup (singles Stableford) with a superb 40 points. Charlie Buttaci was runner-up with 37 points. At the AGM, John Mayley was elected Captain and Alex Gretton was elected Vice-Captain.

This was our third consecutive visit to the Cotswolds Hotel, Golf and Spa. We were well looked after by the Hotel, including free room upgrades and this time we enjoyed dry weather on the golf course. The problem was that the golf course was very wet - we only just escaped a partial (holes 1-9) buggy ban on the Friday when Alex Gretton won the Wally Richards Cup with a superb 39 Stableford points. But we were not so lucky on the Saturday after heavy overnight rain, so the Shaugnessy Swish had to be reduced to a 9-hole competition because of the partial buggy ban. Tristan Gretton made it a family double, winning the Swish Trophy with a magnificent 23 points. His total score of 39 points also won the 18-hole prize donated by John Graham. Work issues prevented Captain John Wyatt from attending on Friday, but, in spite of this setback, the annual dinner was a great success.

Badgemore Park is proving to be a popular venue with the members, but turnouts in our three previous visits have been disappointing. This year 21 players, including 4 guests, enjoyed lovely weather, a course in excellent condition and good food. Hats off to our President Alec Bath who had been ill the previous evening but rose from his sickbed to welcome everyone to his President’s Day. Nigel Bailey won the Presidents Cup and also teamed up with Charlie Buttaci and Giuseppe Lo Bue to win the Autumn Cup. Tim Shaugnessy retained the Past Captains’ Cup while Nick Meredith won the Guests’ prize.
Last year, we won the Portal Cup, our first inter-regional trophy for 5 years. This year, we captured both the Walker Cup and Newport Cup but failed to retain the Portal Cup by the narrowest of margins. Well played, Team!
