President's Day

President’s Day: President’s Cup, Autumn Cup & Past Captains' Cup

Badgemore Park Golf Club - Wednesday 13 September, 2023

On a lovely early Autumn day, President Alec Bath welcomed 11 members and 4 guests (Badgemore Park member David Irwin and SRGS members Roger Dyer, Paul O’Neill and Steve Smith) to Badgemore Park Golf Club to celebrate his President’s Day.

Since joining the Society, no year has passed without Tim Shaughnessy winning a Society trophy. But 2023 was not looking good. Following a major back operation, he has been struggling with his game, but recently things had started to look up. First, he tweaked his swing, adding in what can only be called the ‘Timmy twerk’; second, he was still inspired by the quality performance of his playing partner in a memorable Portal Cup victory the previous week; and thirdly, he was enjoying a higher than normal handicap and no Society deductions. From this strong foundation, the Caversham maestro powered his way to a superb 39 points to win the President’s Cup.

Another member experiencing lean times on the golf course was Society stalwart Giuseppe Lo Bue. Seasoned Giuseppe watchers had attributed this to the worrying performances of his beloved football teams, Chelsea and Italy. Happily, he enjoyed a welcome return to form at Badgemore Park, securing second place with an excellent 34 points.

Tim also won the Past Captains’ Cup, with Giuseppe runner-up.

Giuseppe was able to turn the tables on Tim in the  Autumn Cup (Team of 3 Stableford ‘Waltz’) - he, Phil Spracklen and Roger Dyer scored 72 points to win the cup by one point from Tim, Nigel Bailey and Alec Bath.

Paul O’Neill won the Guests’ Prize with a typically buccaneering 35 points.

Once again, Badgemore Park produced an excellent dinner to round off a very enjoyable day.
