Spring Meeting: Viscount Horne & McAlpine Cups

The Springs Golf Club, near Wallingford - Tuesday 23 May, 2023

On a glorious Spring morning, 20 members gathered at The Springs Golf Club to compete for the Viscount Horne Cup (handicap indexes up to 21.5) and the McAlpine Cup (handicap indexes over 21.5). We were very pleased to welcome new member Josh Lawrence and to welcome back old friends Alex Gretton and Maron (Maz) Wyatt. Last year, new member Nigel Bailey played in 3 events before stunning the members by winning 7 competitions in quick succession. This year, Josh Lawrence has got his ‘feet under the table’ even more quickly by winning the Viscount Horne Cup, his second competition, with a magnificent 38 points. Well played, Josh! These days, no Society event passes without the Wyatt Gang leaving its mark; and this Spring Meeting was no exception. After a quiet front nine, John Wyatt played a typically swashbuckling back nine for 21 points, sufficient to push the always-dangerous Simon Homans, also on 37 points, into 3rd place.

The McAlpine Cup was won by Andy Burnett with 37 points thanks to finishing the front nine with a 5-pointer and then finishing the back nine with a 4-pointer. This was just enough to relegate Chris Apsey into 2nd place with an excellent 36 points.

At dinner, new Captain Dave Wiggett explained that President Alec Bath had been unable to attend due to illness and wished him a speedy recovery on behalf of all the members. He welcomed former president Ken Beresford who kindly agreed to present the prizes, including the voucher for a complimentary 4-ball at Donnington Valley, won by Chris Apsey.

Both the Viscount Horne Cup and the McAlpine Cup scores for the current year can be found under 'Competitions'.
