GWR v SR for the Sansom-Newnham Cup

As the Southern could raise a team of only 9 players, we agreed to lend them one of ours to

make the match 10-a-side. Following his dismal performance at Downshire, the Secretary

volunteered to play for the opposition, confident that his contribution was unlikely to swing

the match in their favour (and so it proved!).

The forecast was for light showers and this was the case in the morning 4-balls over the

pleasant Shey Copse 9-hole course. Captain Denzel led from the front, ably partnered by

Dave Hawes and there were also wins for Tim and John Mayley and Malcolm and John

Bolger so that we led 3-2 at lunch.

In the afternoon, over the challenging Hoebridge course, the showers quickly turned into one

continuous downpour making several greens on the back 9 unplayable. The last 4 singles

matches were agreed as draws due to the atrocious conditions. Of the other 6, we won 2

(Denzel & Steve Barry), lost 2 and drew 2. With the singles shared 5-5, the final result was

GWR 8 SR 7. As usual, the Southern were excellent hosts and the matches were played in
