We are in the process of creating a new website that will be much easier to maintain, and hopefully easier to use.

It exists under a temporary web address at the moment but when it goes live it will have the usual www.gwrgolf.co.uk address.
You will be able to link to the old website for historical information, until we bring the data across.

It's not quite ready but why not have a quick look to see what it looks like?
Click here to go to the new website.
Click on the Menus above and below the header, or on any ‘Drop Down’ options, for full details of the Society’s activities.
The ten latest additions/updates are shown on the Home page,
with the option to look at 'Older updates'.

Annual Dinner & Golf
Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa Friday 27 October, 2017
This was our 5th successive visit to Donnington Valley and once again we enjoyed excellent weather. Disappointingly, numbers were well down on previous years with 19 members plus guest Steve Lane competing for the Wally Richards Cup and 24 attending the annual dinner.

The golf course was in good condition but the narrow fairways and treacherous greens made scoring difficult. As usual, the course held no fears for Simon Homans who won the Wally Richards Cup with a buccaneering 35 points.
Maestro Tim Shaughnessy was runner-up with 32 points, pushing Pat Wyatt into
third place on countback. Click here for the scores.

The Society’s 73rd Annual Dinner was enjoyed by all, with good food, good speeches and good humour. The highlight was when Raffle Supremo Gordon Shirreffs invited Master of Ceremonies Extraordinaire Alec Bath to pull out the first winning ticket. What Alec didn’t know was that Gordon had substituted a wine bucket half full of ice cubes and icy water for the raffle ticket bucket. Reaching into the bucket, Alec got a nasty shock and a cold, wet hand. How we laughed!
The raffle raised £215.

On the Saturday, Dave & Craig Wiggett plus guest Simon Shaughnessy joined
10 of the ‘overnighters’ to compete for the Shaughnessy Swish Trophy.
Alex Gretton put a disappointing Friday performance behind him to win with a swashbuckling 39 points, two more than the always-dangerous Simon Homans.

Dashwood Salver Final
Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa Friday 27 October, 2017
The Dashwood Knockout Final between Pat Wyatt and Dave Hughes was played at Donnington Valley after a series of unavoidable delays. The contestants decided to play a straight KO comp rather that the modified KO rules.
After a steady start Pat started to edge forward at the 5th getting to 3 up by the 8th. Dave momentarily pulled it back to 2up at the turn but Pat continued getting back to 3up at the 10th and 4up at the 14th. It looked all over for Dave until he started to claw back the deficit until he was 1 down going up the 18th.
Dave was first to drive and scuffed it not many yards down the fairway Pat stepped up and smashed his drive into the trees on the right of the fairway just at the dogleg. Dave played his second shot towards the green about 100 yards short.
We found Pat's drive but luck was not favouring him as his ball had nestled into a hollow and it wasn't an animal scrape and he did his best to dig it out but not far, and his 3rd shot was not much better. His 4th landed on the green about 6 feet from the pin. Meanwhile Dave wasn't having much better luck with his 3rd and 4th shots just getting to the edge of the green. Miraculously Dave sunk the putt for a 5 and Pat needed to can his putt for the half to take the match. But luck didn't go Pat's way and he missed the putt. The boys then went down the first again with Dave triumphing over Pat. Well done Dave and commiserations to Pat.

Reading Golf Club

80th Anniversary Golf and Celebration
Thursday 21st September 2017
On a dull day with a few showers (but drier than expected), 20 members and
8 guests gathered at Reading Golf Club> to celebrate our 80th Anniversary.
To mark the occasion, every player was presented with a Reading Golf Club
pitch repairer and a GWR ball marker mounted on a poker chip.

Reading Golf Club allowed us to use their Golf Simulator for a ‘Nearest the Pin’ competition (in addition to ‘Nearest the Pin’ competitions at all four Par 3 holes).
There was also an added twist to the Singles and ‘Team of 3’ Stableford competitions - players could play a ‘Joker’ at two nominated holes (one on each half) that doubled their Stableford points on those holes.

In the Singles Stableford competition, Tim Shaughnessy and Charlie Buttaci both scored 40 points, with Tim declared the winner on countback.

The ‘Team of 3’ Aggregate Stableford competition was won by Colin Parsons (LMS), Charlie Buttaci and Alec Bath with 102 points, 5 more than runners-up
Paul O’Neill (SR), Andy Burnett and John Bolger.

Paul O’Neill (SR) won the Guests competition scoring an impressive 45 points, with Graham Collins (ER) runner-up on 41.

Portal, Walker & Newport Cups
Richings Park Golf Club Tuesday 5 September 2017
These were the first inter-regional competitions since the withdrawal of the
LMS Golfing Society - their team was hugely missed. It was also the first time
that all three cups were played for over 27 holes in a single day.
In the morning we competed for the Walker and Newport Cups over 9 holes
and in the afternoon the Portal Cup reverted back to the preferred format of
4-ball better ball matchplay (over 18 holes).

The GWR team put in a terrific performance in the morning (Denzel leading the way with 22 Stableford points), winning the Walker Cup by a margin of 13 points. Sadly, the Secretary disgraced himself by 3-putting from four feet at the last hole; this allowed the Southern to walk off with the Newport Cup, based on countback after we tied on 37 points. Click here for the scores from both Competitions.

In the afternoon the Secretary made way for Roy Jackson who delivered a sparkling performance which helped the team to win 3 of their 4 matches and retain the Portal Cup. Click here for the scores.

The weather was pleasant, apart from a few rain showers. The golf course was in good condition and the food was first class. Well done Richings Park! Overall, the day was a success and appeared to be enjoyed by all.

Dorset Golf Resport

Wareham Golf Club

Summer Break at the Dorset Golf Resort
Sunday 20 August to Tuesday 22 August, 2017
After a successful first visit in 2011, 23 members and guests returned to the
Dorset Golf Resort near Bere Regis for 3 days of golf including a round at Wareham Golf Club just down the road.

On the Sunday we competed for the Arthur Pinfold Cup (Singles Stableford) over the Lakeland and Parkland 9-hole loops. Scoring was impressive despite several lengthy rain showers. Simon Homans led the way with a swashbuckling 41 points, with Denzel Howard edging out Tristan Gretton for second place due to a better back 9 after both had scored 39 points.
Click here for the Arthur Pinfold Cup scores.

On the Monday morning, 12 members played golf over the Lakeland and Woodland loops whilst others visited nearby tourist attractions such as Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door or simply relaxed. Simon again produced the best Stableford score (37 points), closely pursued by Dave Wiggett with 36.
John Bolger and Mike Embleton paced themselves by playing only 9 holes,
John scoring best with 16 points.

In the afternoon we made the short journey to Wareham Golf Club for the
Dr Newnham Cup (Pairs Aggregate Stableford). Everyone enjoyed the short but interesting course and the beautiful weather.
The winners, with 71 points, were Maron Wyatt and Alan Gregory.
Runners-up on 69 points were Captain Giuseppe and Denzel Howard.
Click here for the Dr Newnham Cup scores.

Tuesday was another fine day for our final event, a Pairs Better Ball Stableford for the Bert Cowlard Trophy. After being runner-up the previous day, Captain Giuseppe went one better with the help of partner John Wyatt, producing a better ball total of 46; this was just good enough to beat Alex Gretton and John Graham, thanks to a better back 9. Click here for the Bert Cowlard Trophy scores.

The Peter Skeldon Trophy is awarded to the player with the best aggregate Stableford total for the 3 main Summer Break competitions. After a couple of second places, Denzel’s aggregate score of 113 points was good enough to pip Simon (112) and Maron (109) for the Trophy.

Dashwood Salver Round 2 - 26th July 2017
Match No.1 Phil vs Mario
Despite Mario’s nimbleness on the bike he got punctured by Phil’s better game.
Match No.2 Dan vs Dave Hughes
Dave mounted another assault even though he’s playing off a much lower handicap after demolishing John Graham in the previous round he outplayed Dan.
Match No.3 Andy vs Pat
What can I say only last year our venerable Secretary was beating his chest when he won the Vice President’s Cup with 40 points funnily enough with Pat coming in second, it seems this year the tables have been turned with Pat winning his match using the modified KO rules.
Match No.4 Gordon vs Charlie
Yet another Italian falls by the wayside although it was nip and tuck between Gordon and Charlie for most of the round with no more than one hole in it until Gordon took the 14, 15 and 16 to take the match.

Semi Final line up
Match 1 Phil vs Dave Hughes
Match 2 Pat vs Gordon
Don’t forget semi final and final matches to be played on a neutral course and by mutual agreement.

Burford Golf Club

Vice Presidents Day at Chippenham G.C. - 25 July 2017
Vice Presidents' Challenge Trophy & Cup
On a glorious summer’s day, 22 members plus potential new member Simon Offley were present to witness Vice President Gordon Shirreffs regain his VP mojo, in style and with some panache. It all began with the morning VP Challenge
(9 hole Texas Scramble) when Gordon’s team edged a thrilling contest, scoring 92.8 (net) to Vice President Alec Bath’s 92.9.     Click here for the team scores.

With a swagger in his swing, Gordon went on to win the Vice Presidents’ Cup with 36 points, four more than runner-up Pat Wyatt.    Click here for the scores.
He also had the impertinence to win both ‘Nearest the Pin’ competitions!
Well played, Gordon!

Dashwood Salver Update - 30 June 2017
Round 1 updates.
Phil Spracklen overcame John Bolger (the Sandhurst Hobbit) by 4 and 3 no doubt helped by John's immense generosity of allowing his handicap to be chopped by
5 shots for winning at Burford, that's what you get for stardom.
Roy had to concede to Pat due to operational difficulties ie he had had an operation....I hesitate to ask where.
Dave Hawes conceded to Gordon due to Dave's overwhelming diary commitment, that's the price you pay for being in work and an international bon vivant.
Dave Hughes outgunned John Graham by playing the game of his life some 12 shots below his normal handicap.
Click here for the Latest position.

Burford Golf Club

Captain's Day at Burford G.C. - 26 June 2017
On Monday 26 June, 28 members plus guest Steve Lane joined Captain Giuseppe to celebrate his Captain’s Day. The golf course was in great shape and, after the recent dry spell, the ball was running a long way. Ideal conditions for straight hitters with a decent shortgame - like John Bolger. The Sandhurst Hobbit, in the form of his life, took the course apart, winning the Captain’s Cup with 46 points,
8 better than runner-up Denzel Howard who pipped Pat Wyatt on count back.
Click here for all the scores.

John’s team was also awarded the Earl of Dudley Cup (team of 3 Stableford:
2 best scores on each hole) but the next day an arithmetical error was discovered which relegated the team to 3rd place. The actual winners were Giuseppe Lo Bue, Andy Burnett & Steve Lane scoring 89 points, one point more than runners-up
Pat Wyatt, Malcolm Slawson & Pete Jefferies.

Dashwood Salver Update - May 2017

Wragg Barn Golf Club

Spring Meeting at Wragg Barn - 30 May 2017
On a windy but very pleasant Spring day, 22 members and guests
contested the ViscountHorne and McAlpine Cups at Wrag Barn Golf Club.
We welcomed Captain Steve Stoddartand & Secretary Colin Parsons of the
LMS (London) Golfing Society, also potential newmember Steve Barry.

Tim Shaughnessy won the Viscount Horne Cup with a magnificent 37points, pushed all the way by runner-up Gordon Shirreffs on 35 points.

The higher handicappers must have found the Wrag Barn course quite challenging as Kevin Davis’ 26 points was sufficient to win the McAlpine Cup with John Graham runner-up, also scoring 26 points.

Colin Parsons won the Guests’ prize with 33 points.

Merrist Wood Golf Club

Sansom-Newnham Cup 2017
This year, the Southern Railway Golfing Society hosted our annual match for the Sansom-Newnham Cup at Merrist Wood Golf Club, Worplesdon near Guildford. Generally, the course was in good condition but the greens were a little bumpy. Although 6,285 yards off the yellow tees, it was interesting and enjoyable to play. The weather was fair but cool, warming up slightly in the early afternoon.

The morning format was 4-Ball Better Ball over holes 1-9 but, because both teams had agreed to have a player short, Captain Giuseppe and Southern Captain Paul O’Neil agreed to play their own Singles match.
We got off to a near-perfect start, winning the first 4 matches and led 4-1 going into the afternoon Singles. These were keenly contested, with GWR edging it by 4 wins to 3 with 2 halved matches.
GWR retain the Sansom-Newnham Cup - beating the Southern 9-5.
Click here for the individual Results.
The match was played in the true spirit of the game and we look forward to defending the trophy next year. Finally, special congratulations to the Sandhurst Hobbit who, at the grand old age of 84, won his Singles match 3&2. Well done, John!

Well done Darren! Click here for all the scores.

Vice Captain Malcolm Slawson, playing for the first time since October, duly topped his first drive into the pond and then proceeded to play some quality golf to win the Cup with 35 points. John Graham pushed Malcolm all the way but had to settle for second place on countback.

Earlier, President Ken Beresford had welcomed 18 members and guest Kevin Glass to Reading Golf Club to celebrate his President’s Day.
After the recent hot, dry weather, the fairways were a little bare in places but overall the course was in excellent condition.
Phil Spracklen won the President’s Cup, scoring an amazing 45 points; runner-up was David Hughes edging out both Tim Shaughnessy and Kevin Glass based on a better back nine. Click here for the scores.

Champagne Challenge at Teignmouth Golf Club.
Thursday 16 August 2016
With this year’s Summer Break taking place in June, there was no fixture in August until the Professor offered to organise a day out in Devon. We welcomed back Denzel’s father, Hadley, who was in terrific form and secured second place with a magnificent 40 points. Andy Gretton was the champagne winner, marking his return to his birthplace with a buccaneering 41 points.
Well played, Andy!      Click here for the scores.

Chippenham Golf Club

Chippenham Golf Club

Vice Presidents' Day - Chippenham Golf Club
Tuesday 26 July 2016
In perfect golfing conditions, 18 members enjoyed an excellent day at Chippenham Golf Club. Once again we were well looked after, the course was in good condition and the catering was first class.

We started with a 9-hole Texas Scramble for the Vice Presidents’ Challenge Trophy. Vice President Alec Bath’s team, led by Alan Galley, again prevailed against Vice President Gordon Shirreffs’ team in a keenly contested match. In fact the outcome was probably determined by one wonder shot backed up by a long single putt: Alan Galley’s drive on the 9th had run through a bunker (now known as “Denzel’s bunker”) onto the bunker bank/upslope, approx 260 yards from the green; Denzel then smashed a 5-wood over the trees ending up pin high on the left hand side fringe of the green from where Giuseppe sank the putt for an eagle 3 ……....and condemned Gordon to yet another year of asking himself “Why me?”.     Click here for the team scores.

In the afternoon we played for the Vice Presidents’ Cup and something strange happened, something that amounted to almost a modern day miracle: the Secretary actually played quite well and brought home the bacon by scoring 40 points. Gangmeister Pat Wyatt overcame a 3 point deduction to secure second place with an impressive 34 points.     Click here for the scores.

All the members present were pleased to welcome back David Hughes and we wish him well in his continuing battle to overcome his serious foot injury. Another member of the walking wounded is Pete Jefferies who injured a hand shortly before the event but still turned up to support his Texas Scramble team mates in the morning and then struggled through the pain to complete 18 holes in the afternoon. Well done, Pete!

Winter Warmer & AGM - Sandford Springs
Wednesday 30 March 2016
On a sometimes chilly but dry day, 22 members competed for the John Prowting Cup over the 'Lakes' and 'Park' loops. It should have been 25 but 3 had to drop out due a buggy ban, an unfortunate consequence of Storm Katie passing through 48 hours earlier. Especially welcome were new members Bill Cleveland and John Graham, also Brendon Ryan and Les Southall both returning after surgery.
After 2 winless years, Pat Wyatt stormed to victory with a swashbuckling 36 points, closely followed by the always dangerous Tim Shaughnessy with an impressive 35 points. Click here for all the scores.
After the golf, President Ken Beresford and Gerald Daniels joined the 22 competitors for a light meal and the AGM.

Donnington Valley

Annual Dinner & Golf - Donnington Valley, Newbury
Friday 30 October 2015
On Friday 30 October 36 members and guests (our highest attendance for many years) enjoyed the Society's 71st annual dinner and prize presentation at the Donnington Valley Hotel near Newbury.
It had all started so badly. Arriving in the rain, we faced the prospect of a wet morning's golf. Then we were told that all buggies had been banned from the course due to the heavy overnight rain. This was when the camaraderie within the Society came to the fore, with several members offering their power trollies to those whose buggies had been cancelled. As a result, only 2 members had to forego their round of golf. Miraculously the rain stopped as the first group teed off and we played for the Wally Richards Cup in perfect golfing condtions. The winner was young Craig Wiggett, playing some fabulous golf and scoring 43 Stableford points, closely followed by an inspired Dave Arnall on 41 points.
Click here for all the scores.
In the evening, an excellent dinner was served in the superb Cromwell suite, following which the members were royally entertained by Captain Steve Simmons, President Ken Beresford, toastmaster Alec Bath, Howard Rowley and Tim Shaughnessy. Click here for Howard's superb presentation photos.
Thanks also to Gordon Shirreffs and Giuseppe who ran the raffle which raised £280. Gordon was also the sweepstake winner and the following day was the victor with a cheeky 37 points when 19 members plus guest Simon Shaughnessy competed for the Shaughnessy Swish Trophy. Runners-up with 36 points were Craig Wiggett and John Wyatt. Click here for all the scores.

On a dry and sunny day, 17 members joined Ken Beresford at Reading Emmer Green Golf Club to celebrate his President's Day. Ken gave a special welcome to Alec Bath and Tim Shaughnessy who both went on to dominate the day's competitions on a course in great condition. Tim's score of 38 points won the President's Cup, with Alec runner-up on 36. Click here for all the scores. Tim also won the Past Captains' Cup, with Alec in second place. Click here for the result. But Alec turned the tables by winning the Autumn Cup by one point, scoring 74 with partners Kevin Glass and John Bolger. Tim and partners Ken Beresford and Giuseppe Lo Bue were runners-up. Barnham Broom

Summer Break at Barnham Broom Golf Hotel & Spa
Sunday 16 August to Tuesday 18 August 2015
On 16 August, 25 members and guests joined Captain Steve Simmons at the excellent Barnham Broom Golf Hotel & Spa and enjoyed a memorable 3-day summer break.
The Sunday afternoon was, thankfully, warm and sunny. We welcomed Rob Wyatt, playing his first round with the Society and then competed for the Arthur Pinfold Cup (Singles Stableford) on the tricky Valley course. Four members of the legendary Wyatt gang tied for first place on 35 points; on countback Tristan Gretton was declared the winner and Simon Homans the runner-up. Click here for all the scores. At dinner we were delighted to welcome veteran Society stalwart Ken Gilbert who moved to Norwich following retirement. Ken has been married for an incredible 65 years and will celebrate his 88th birthday in December.
On Monday, another lovely day, we played the Hill course for the Dr Newnham Weekend Cup (pairs aggregate Stableford). The scoring was better, including 42 points from an inspired Howard Rowley. The winners were Tristan Gretton and Andrew Stamford with 72 points and the runners-up, on 71 points, were Nina Croft and Gordon Shirreffs. Click here for all the scores. In the afternoon, ten members played a Texas Scramble over the first nine holes of the Valley course (won by Andrew Stamford, John Wyatt and Maron Wyatt) while others enjoyed some excellent real ales in the atmospheric and wonderfully named Ugly Bug Inn. After dinner Tim Shaughnessy, on behalf of the members, presented the Secretary with an inspired assortment of wines, spirits and golfing equipment in appreciation of all his work for the Society. Responding, the Secretary burbled on for a while before thanking those present for their thoughtfulness and generosity.
Disappointingly the rain arrived on Tuesday morning but 21 intrepid souls ventured forth to contest the Bert Cowlard Trophy (pairs better ball Stableford) over the Valley course. The winners were Tristan Gretton and Dave Arnall scoring 41 points, with Tim Shaughnessy and Roy Jackson runners-up only one point behind. Click here for all the scores.
The winner of the Peter Skeldon Trophy (best individual aggregate Stableford score over the 3 rounds) was, of course, Tristan Gretton scoring a magnificent 111 points. Runner-up was Howard Rowley with an excellent 106 points while Simon Homans secured third place with a gutsy 98 points. Click here for the aggregate scores.

Chippenham Golf Club

Vice Presidents' Day - Chippenham Golf Club
Tuesday 28 July 2015
Eighteen members played at Chippenham on a dry but windy day and found the course a bit of a handful. In the afternoon, one man rose to the challenge to win his first Society singles competition, the Vice Presidents' Cup. Alan Gregory has been struggling with his golf recently but, after topping his opening tee shot, scored a brilliant 21 points on the outward nine and followed it up with a solid twelve points on the very challenging back nine. Well done Alan!
Gordon Shirreffs was runner-up with 30 points. Click here for all the scores.
Earlier in the day, 2 teams of seven players had competed for the Vice Presidents' Challenge Trophy, playing a Texas Scramble over nine holes. Alan Galley, deputising for Alec Bath (plumbing problems in Scotland), inspired his team to a 74 - 78 victory over Gordon's team. Click here for the scores.
At lunch we were delighted to welcome two veteran Society stalwarts, Bob Brown and Bob Lines, both on top form. Making the effort to come along and join us for a couple of hours was much appreciated.

Portal & Walker Cups

Portal, Walker & Newport Cups - Bletchingley Golf Club
Wednesday 1 July 2015
This year all 3 competitions were played on a single day (2 days in previous years). To achieve this, the Portal Cup format was changed from pairs betterball match play (teams of 8) to a pairs betterball bogey competition (teams of 8), each pair playing against the course. Unfortunately the 1st July was the hottest July day since records began. Conditions were so severe that quite a few players were unable to complete the afternoon round (Walker & Newport Cups). In the morning, Cec and Phil played suberbly to finish 3 up against the course. But overall our team came last in both the Portal Cup Click here for details. and the Walker Cup Click here for all the Stableford scores. However, we came second in the Newport Cup Click here for details. thenks to sterling performances by Captain Simmo and, especially, Roy Jackson.
Although the team's results are disappointing, we are very grateful to the 'Bletchingley 8' for representing the Society and giving their all in extreme weather conditions.

Richings Park Golf Club

Spring Meeting - Richings Park Golf Club
Wednesday 20 May 2015
Once again the turnout at Richings Park was adversely affected by late cancellations, mainly due to work commitments and illness. Even Capn Simmo was urgently called away to save the Cornish NHS, with Giuseppe proving himself an able deputy.
On a pleasant dry day, 16 members competed for the Viscount Horne and McAlpine Cups. Charlie Buttaci was in no mood to relinquish his title and retained the Viscount Horne Cup with a fine round and 35 points, closely followed by Chris Redhead on 33 points. Click here for the scores.
In the higher handicap group, Dave Hawes was in awesome form, scoring a magnificent 42 points to win the McAlpine Cup. Malcolm Slawson was runner-up with 32 points. Click here for the scores.
At dinner, President Ken Beresford delivered an eloquent tribute to Fred Grace who died in April at the age of 92. Fred was a true gentleman, a fine Captain and one of the Society's staunchest supporters. He will be sadly missed.

Dummer Golf Club

Match v SRGS - Dummer Golf Club
Tuesday 12 May 2015
Although the match ended in a draw, the Southern Railway Golfing Society, as holders, retained the Sansom Newnham Cup. On a coolish but dry day, we won two, halved two and lost one of the morning 4-balls. In the afternoon the Southern fought back, winning five and halving one of the singles to halve the match overall. The course was in good condition and the match was played in the true spirit of the game.

In warm and humid conditions, Charlie won the President's Cup with 38 points, two clear of Giuseppe on 36. Click here for details. Charlie also had the audacity to win both 'Nearest the Pin' competitions.

Richings Park Golf Club

Portal Cup Round 3, Walker Cup and Newport Cup
Richings Park Golf Club
Wednesday 3 September 2014
There was a dramatic conclusion to the Portal Cup at Richings Park with 7 of the 8 matches going to the last green. We beat the Southern 2½ - 1½. But the Eastern also beat the LMS by the same margin. This meant that the GWR and ER tied on both points and games won. The result therefore had to be determined based on 'Winning Margins', with the Eastern emerging as worthy winners.
Click here for the results of all three Portal Cup rounds.
In the afternoon, the 4 railway golfing societies competed for the Walker Cup. The winners were the LMS with consistently high scoring. Inspite of heroic individual performances from Tim (43 points) and Denzel (41 points), the two best scores of the competition, the GWR finished a disappointing fourth.
Click here for all the Walker Cup scores.
For the first time, the Newport Cup was decided on points scored in the Walker Cup. The LMS were again the winners, with GWR again in 4th place.

Summer Break at Bryn Meadows & Rolls of Monmouth
Sunday 17 August to Tuesday 19 August 2014
On Sunday 17 August, 26 members and guests descended on the Bryn Meadows Golf and Country Club for the first two days of the Society's Summer Break. There was a special welcome for Cec Jackson, returning after a long illness to play the afternoon round. At Bryn Meadows we enjoyed an interesting and challenging golf course, excellent accommodation and delicious food. We also enjoyed two days of dry weather. (I will have to check with the Professor but I believe that this is the first time ever that two consecutive dry days have been recorded in Wales.) The Sunday afternoon competition was a Singles Stableford for the Arthur Pinfold Cup. Charlie Buttaci was the winner, scoring 38 points. Richard Taylor was runner-up with 36 points Click here for the results.
On Monday morning we competed in pairs for the Dr Newnham Cup (aggregate Stableford). The winners were Tim Shaughnessy and Dave Hawes, scoring 66 points with Simon Homans and Giuseppe Lo Bue just 2 points behind on 64. Click here for the results.

The prize was a dozen Srixon balls donated by Your Golf Travel and these were shared by two teams both scoring 39 points. Click here for the results.
On the Tuesday morning we left Bryn Meadows and headed east to the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club. The course itself was a delight with stunning scenery and many memorable holes. The winners of the Bert Cowlard Trophy (pairs better ball Stableford) were Simon Homans and Craig Wiggett, scoring 48 points, with a better back nine than David Hughes and Dave Hawes, also on 48 points.

Chippenham Golf Club

Captain's Day - Chippenham Golf Club
Thursday 31 July 2014
21 members joined Roy Jackson to celebrate both his Captain's Day and his 70th birthday. Apart from his golf, the great man was in sparkling form, although there was general concern over his fitness after several unsuccessful attempts to blow out the solitary candle on his birthday cake. The golf itself was totally dominated by the Slawson clan. In the morning, Denzel led his team (Malcolm, Mario and Welsh Alan) to victory in the Texas Scramble, a format that proved very popular with all the players. Pat, Charlie and Dave (Hawes) were runners-up. Click here for details.
In the afternoon, Malcolm won the Captain's Cup scoring 39 points. Denzel was runner-up with 38. Click here for details.
The dynamic duo also had the impertinence to win both 'Nearest the Pin' competitions and to share the Captain's Mystery Prize (best Stableford score for the par 4 holes: 7,8,10,12,15,16). A memorable day, enjoyed by all.

Weston Turville

Portal Cup Rounds 1 & 2 - Weston Turville Golf Club

Captain Roy is planning a 'special huddle' prior to the start of the final round at Richings Park on the 3rd September. Click here for the results.
