Portal, Walker & Newport Cups          Brentwood Golf Club          Thursday 3 September 2026

The Eastern Region Golfing Society were our hosts for this year’s three inter-regional competitions at Brentwood Golf Club. Fortunately, most of our ‘big guns’ were available to play, so we fielded a very strong team. In the morning, over holes 1-9, we won both the Walker Cup (best 7 Stableford scores from 8) and the Newport Cup (Captains and Secretaries Stableford). When we won our first two Portal Cup matches in the afternoon, we were looking good for the clean sweep. But fate can be cruel. We lost the third and fourth matches to finish Portal Cup runners-up. Summer Break at Breadsall Priory - 16-18 August, 2026

On Sunday 16 August, 19 members joined Captain Alex Gretton for our Summer Break at Breadsall Priory  in Derbyshire, our first visit. Fortunately the recent extremely hot weather gave way to much more pleasant conditions. But the very dry fairways on both courses caused problems - many a good drive ran and ran and ended up in trouble. Nevertheless, scoring was generally good. Chris Apsey  won the Ken Beresford Cup (Singles Stableford);  Nigel Bailey and Steve Simmons won the Dr Newnham Cup (Pairs Aggregate Stableford); and John Wyatt and Steve Simmons combined well to win the Bert Cowlard Trophy (Pairs Betterball Stableford). Chris Apsey produced the best aggregate score for all 3 rounds to win the Peter Skeldon Trophy. Click here for the full report and all the scores.

Vice Presidents’ Day Report - Wednesday 29 July 2026

On one of the hottest days of the year (but not quite as hot as Wrag Barn on Captain’s Day), 17 members and potential new members joined Captain Alex Gretton at Richings Park Golf Club to compete for the Vice Presidents’ Cup. The day started with 3 teams playing a 9-hole Texas Scramble, won by Josh Lawrence, Nigel Bailey, John Graham and Kevin Davis. In the afternoon, Andy Burnett won the Vice Presidents’ Cup. The members were very appreciative that President Alec Bath came along to support the event even though he was not well enough to play golf. He and Captain Alex heroically covered for our 2 Vice Presidents who, sadly, were unable to attend. Click here for the full report and all the scores.

Captain’s Day Report - Thursday 25 June, 2026

Following a Met Office red extreme heat warning, many members reluctantly dropped out of Alex Gretton’s Captain’s Day at Wrag Barn Golf Club. Nevertheless nine men of steel, including new member Steve Smith, braved temperatures of around 35 degrees to compete for the Captain’s Cup (Singles Stableford) and the Earl of Dudley Cup (teams of 3, with the best 2 Stableford scores counting at each hole).  Tristan Gretton won the Captain’s Cup and the Earl of Dudley Cup was won by Alex Gretton, Simon Homans and John Mayley.

Spring Meeting Report - Wednesday 27 May 2026

Tuesday the 26 May was the hottest Spring day ever recorded, with the temperature just exceeding 35 degrees. Fortunately, the next day was slightly cooler and 16 members and 2 potential new members braved the elements to contest the Viscount Horne and McAlpine Cups at The Springs Resort and Golf Club near Wallingford (our 7th visit in the last 8 years). Tim Shaughnessy won the Viscount Horne Cup with a superb 38 points. Nick Jarvis won the McAlpine Cup with an excellent 35 points.

Winter Warmer & AGM Report: Wed 29 April 2026

24 members attended our first event of the year, at Kirtlington Golf Club (our third consecutive visit) where we played for the John Prowting Cup, a Singles Stableford competition. Will Burroughs was in sparkling form and blew away the rest of the field to win the trophy with an incredible 43 points. Alex Gretton was runner-up with 35 points. At the AGM, Alex Gretton was elected Captain and Nigel Bailey Vice Captain. And Simon Homans replaced Andy Burnett as Secretary.  Click here for the full report and scores.

Annual Dinner & Golf            Fri/Sat 24 & 25 Oct 2025

 The Cotswolds Hotel, Golf & Spa, Chipping Norton  

This was our fourth consecutive visit to the Cotswolds Hotel, Golf and Spa. We were well looked after by the Hotel staff, including providing us with an excellent 3-course dinner on Friday evening, after which President Alec Bath presented outgoing Secretary, Andy Burnett with a beautiful book of superb photographs taken during his 40+ years as a Society member.  

Paddy Wyatt won the Wally Richards Cup on Friday with a magnificent 40 Stableford points. Simon Homans won the Shaughnessy Swish Trophy on Saturday with a well-crafted 35 points.
